Pull them out now, and sort as you go
The best time to sort decorations is when you take them out, because you can see what works. Do a quick pass as you unpack and again as you put things away. Anything broken, tangled beyond repair, or never used goes in a pile before it goes back in a box.
Why a Houston garage is tough on decorations
Heat and damp go to work on holiday items all summer. Cardboard soaks up moisture, fabric picks up mildew, and wax can soften. Our humidity guide covers the full list of what struggles in a hot, damp garage. Decorations hit most of it, so they need a plan.
Bring these indoors instead
- Candles and wax decor: heat can soften and warp them.
- Family and heirloom ornaments: a closet shelf indoors is safer than a garage shelf.
- Cards, photos, and paper decor: moisture curls and sticks them together.
- Fabric items: stockings, tree skirts, table linens, and wreaths with ribbon can mildew.
What can stay in the garage goes in the system below.
One tote per category
- Use sturdy plastic totes with latching lids. Cardboard boxes absorb moisture and invite pests.
- Group by type, not by room: lights and cords, ornaments, tree and mantel, outdoor decor, table and kitchen.
- Label the side that faces out, not the lid, so you can read it on a shelf.
- Make one tote the open-first tote. Put the tree stand, extension cords, hooks, and a flashlight in it, so you can start decorating without hunting.
- Keep heavy items on the bottom and fragile things on top, and do not stack totes higher than you can safely lift.
Lights, ornaments, and trees
- Test lights before you store them, and again when you take them out. Throw out strands that do not work now, not on the day you want to hang them.
- Wrap each strand around a piece of cardboard, a reel, or a hanger so it does not tangle.
- Wrap ornaments one at a time in packing paper or soft cloth and use a divided tote or box. Plain packing paper is safer than newspaper, which can leave ink.
- Take batteries out of anything that uses them before you store it, so they cannot leak.
- Artificial trees keep best in a tree bag or a large tote, not the original cardboard box, which will soften in garage humidity.
Where they go in the garage
Put totes on shelving, off the concrete. Keep them away from the exterior walls and the garage door, and leave a little space between totes so air can move. If storms are a concern, see our hurricane prep guide and keep the floor clear.
Edit as you unpack
- Save: what you used and liked.
- Share: decorations in good shape that you did not use. See where to donate.
- Sell: larger or collectible items worth $50 or more.
- Sweep: broken, faded, or tangled items. Ask your hauler what they will not take.
