Sort first, then buy
It is tempting to buy shelves before you start. Wait. Once you have sorted into Save, Share, Sell, and Sweep, you will know how much has to be stored, and you may need less than you thought. Our garage guide covers the sort.
Start with a zone map
A zone is an area where one kind of thing lives. Common ones:
- Car care: washing supplies, towels, and tools for the vehicle.
- Yard and tools: hand tools, hoses, gloves, and lawn equipment.
- Sports and kids: bikes, balls, helmets, and outdoor toys.
- Seasonal and holiday: decorations and off-season gear. See how to store holiday decorations.
- Hobbies and projects: one area for the thing you actually do.
Where each zone goes
- Put the most-used zone closest to the door. If you grab it every week, it should not be behind a bike.
- Use the walls, not the middle. Floor space is for the car and for walking.
- Heavy low, light high. Heavy tools and bins go on lower shelves. Light, bulky items go up top.
- Tape it out first. Use painter's tape to mark zones on the floor and walls for a day or two before you commit.
Keep a clear path
You should be able to open your car doors, walk to the house door, and reach the garage door opener without moving anything. Measure your parked car with the doors open and keep that space clear. A garage that loses its parking spot is not working.
Choosing shelving
- Measure before you buy, including the ceiling, the garage door tracks, and the space around the opener.
- Check the weight rating. Look at the manufacturer's per-shelf rating and plan for less, not more.
- Think about damp. Particleboard can swell in humidity, so look for metal, resin, or sealed shelving, which tends to hold up better in a Houston garage.
- Secure tall units to the wall. Anchoring tall shelves to studs keeps them from tipping.
- Keep the bottom shelf off the floor. A few inches helps with moisture and with storms. See our hurricane prep guide.
Label everything
Use lidded totes and put a label on the side that faces out. A shelf of labeled totes stays organized, and a shelf of anonymous boxes turns back into a pile within a season. Leave a little empty space on every shelf so there is somewhere for new things to go.
What we can't help store
Paint, chemicals, fuel, batteries, and propane tanks are outside what we handle. Mention them in your quote request, and keep them in their own place away from heat and out of reach of children. See our disposal guide for where leftovers can go.
