Start with the essentials box
You packed one for a reason. Open it first. It holds the things you need on day one: toiletries, chargers, medications, bedding, and a few tools. If you labeled your boxes by room, as in our packing guide, the rest of the work is already half done.
The order that works
- Bedrooms and bathrooms. Make the beds, hang towels, and set up the shower. Sleeping and showering in a finished space makes everything else easier.
- Kitchen. Unpack the basics first: a few dishes, pots, utensils, and pantry staples. The rest can wait a few days.
- Living areas. Seating, lamps, and the TV. This is where you will spend your evenings.
- Everything else. Office, decor, closets, and the spare room.
- The garage last. It is where the leftovers pile up, and it should be set up on purpose, not by default. See how to set up garage zones and shelving.
Work one room at a time
- Finish a room before you start the next. A room that is done gives you a place to rest. Half a house of open boxes does not.
- Put things where you will use them. Skip the urge to make it perfect. Place items where they make sense now and adjust after a week.
- Break down boxes as you empty them. Flatten them right away so they do not take over. Check the City's recycling guidelines for what is accepted.
- Set aside what does not fit. It is normal to find things that do not suit the new space. Put them in a box for the Share, Sell, or Sweep piles instead of finding a spot for them.
Give the kitchen extra attention
Kitchens take the longest to unpack and the longest to feel right. Unpack where you cook first, near the stove and sink, and keep everyday items between waist and shoulder height. Leave the specialty gadgets and holiday dishes for later.
The one-week check
After about a week, look at what is still in boxes. If you have not missed it, ask whether you need it. Tape those boxes shut, write the date on top, and set them aside. If they are still sealed in a few months, they move to the Share pile. It is a second chance to sort, now that you know what the new place needs.
Keep a running list
Write down what you cannot find as you go. After a week or two, look at the list. Most of what is still missing is in a box you have not opened, and the label should tell you where.
