Clear the Clutter Before Holiday Guests Arrive

You do not need a perfect house for the holidays. You need the few spaces guests actually use to be clear, and a plan for where the overflow goes.

Five spaces, one weekend.

Focus on the spaces guests use

Guests see the entry, the living room, the kitchen, the guest bathroom, and wherever they sleep. A quiet closet or a garage shelf can wait. Resetting five spaces is a weekend. Resetting a whole house is a month.

A plan for the weekend

  1. Entry: clear a spot for coats and shoes. If the closet is full, take out what you do not wear this season.
  2. Guest room: empty a drawer and clear some hanging space. A bare surface for a suitcase helps more than a new throw pillow.
  3. Guest bathroom: clear the counter, put out fresh towels, and stock extra toilet paper and soap.
  4. Kitchen: clear the counters and make room in the fridge. Take out expired items and the things you never use.
  5. Living room: clear the surfaces and use a basket for stray items. Put the basket in a closet, and sort it after the holiday.
